Disc golf has many inherent benefits. Simply showing up to the course will improve your overall health both physically and mentally via exercise, connection with people, connection with nature, stress reduction, and a multitude of other factors. The sport is quickly growing as people are looking for a sustainable way to get outside and be healthy. Disc golf is a pleasure to play. We are all in the sport to play and enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family. But there is another way to consume disc golf that can give you an entirely new appreciation for the sport; be a spectator. Chances are that you have a tournament within a short drive of your home. It doesn’t matter if it is a big event with touring pros or a local tournament without the big names. Go and watch. There is much to appreciate and learn.
In February of 2021, Paul McBeth signed the most lucrative contract in the history of disc golf. It was massive by disc golf standards and lucrative even through the eyes of other major sports. What could disc golf possibly learn from ball golf?! We want to forge our own path, right? This may be true, but it is always wise to learn from those who have already traveled a similar path. There are two sides to this equation. First, disc golf can learn from what ball golf has done right. And secondly, disc golf can learn from what ball golf has done wrong. Both approaches enrich our game and make disc golf all the more enjoyable.
Disc golf has exploded in popularity throughout the pandemic. What started as a few more people on courses has turned into disc golf on major TV networks, massive PDGA membership growth, and disc golf manufacturers running out of stock. Who knew that a pandemic would be so good for the growth of disc golf?!
